The Moroccan hammam ritual at home
Black soap, kessa glove, scrub and rose water: the steps of the Moroccan hammam ritual to recreate at home.
In Morocco, the hammam is much more than a bath: it has been a shared moment of relaxation and care for centuries. The good news is that its key steps are easy to recreate in your bathroom.
1. Heat and steam
Take a hot shower or bath for a few minutes so the steam prepares your skin. A few eucalyptus crystals in a bowl of hot water will fill the room with a fresh scent.
2. Black soap
Apply a thin layer of black soap all over damp skin. Leave for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse lightly.
3. Kessa glove exfoliation
With the exfoliating glove, rub the skin in long, firm strokes, always in the same direction. Dead cells come away and the skin becomes remarkably soft. Avoid the face and sensitive areas.
4. The mask
To brighten your complexion, mix blue Nila powder with a little rose water for a home-made mask. Apply, leave on, then rinse.
5. Nourish
Finish with a body lotion or a few drops of argan oil all over, and mist rose water on your face. Then take a moment to rest with a mint tea.
You can enjoy this ritual once a week. If your skin is sensitive, exfoliate less often.
